Owen Preece is a photographer making work about grief, culture, and identity
Owen was born in Dallas, Texas where he lived with his family until moving to Oregon at the age of ten. His life and work are informed by the contrasting cultures he witnessed while splitting his childhood between Texas and Oregon. Owen seeks to tell stories that highlight our shared human experience. Through emotional, contemplative images, he feels that a bridge of empathy and understanding can be built. Owen would like it if everyone could care for each other as neighbors and speak with actions more often than with words. Owen studied photography and design at Oregon State University, where he began work on his first long-term project, First Times and Last Times, which documents a time of extreme transition for his grandparents as they learn to live with Alzheimer’s disease. Owen is now a graduate student in the environmental journalism program at the University of Montana where he continues to work on long term projects exploring how humans are connected to the land and to each other. Owen looks forward to learning new things about the world whenever he picks up a camera.
